What Does a Dental Hygienist Actually Do?
Good dental hygiene is the set of habits that prevent cavities, gum disease and bad breath. A hygienist is your frontline defence, and regular dental hygiene appointments keep small problems small.

Most people think a hygienist cleans your teeth. That is part of it, and it undersells the job considerably.
A hygienist is the person most likely to catch a problem in your mouth before it becomes expensive, because they are the one looking at your gums closely, regularly, and knowing what early trouble looks like. Good dental hygiene is the foundation of everything else, so here is what a hygienist really does.
Why dental hygiene matters
Good dental hygiene is the set of habits that prevent cavities, gum disease and bad breath. A hygienist is your frontline defence, and regular dental hygiene appointments keep small problems small.
Professional cleaning, properly done
Plaque is soft and you can remove it at home. Leave it long enough and it hardens into tartar, which bonds to the tooth and will not shift for any toothbrush ever made. Removing tartar takes instruments and someone trained to use them. Modern dental hygiene uses an airflow system that cleans with a jet of fine powder, water and air, which is more comfortable than the scraping people remember and better at reaching the gum line.
▶ What happens at a hygiene appointment
Spotting problems early
This is the part that earns the appointment. Your hygienist measures the depth of the space between your gum and each tooth and watches whether it is getting deeper, which is how gum disease is caught before you would ever notice it. They are also checking the soft tissue of your mouth, which is where oral cancer screening quietly happens. Early detection changes outcomes dramatically.
Treating gum disease
If gum disease has taken hold, the treatment is a deeper clean below the gum line, sometimes called scaling and root planing, usually with local anaesthetic across a couple of appointments. Done properly and followed up with good dental hygiene at home, this stops the disease progressing. The bone already lost does not come back, which is the whole argument for going early.
Teaching you to do it properly
What happens in the twelve weeks between appointments matters more than the hour in the chair. A good hygienist looks at your mouth and tells you where you specifically keep missing, usually the inside of the lower front teeth and the back of the last molars, and shows you which interdental brush fits your gaps. Most gum disease starts between the teeth, so that is where the cleaning has to happen. Practise good dental hygiene there and the rest looks after itself.

Who you would see here
Our hygiene team is led by Heather Wright, our hygienist and practice manager, who looks after patients’ gum health day to day. If a hygiene appointment finds something bigger, such as deep pockets or bone loss, you are not sent across the city: Dr Shirin Shahr Baf is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry here, and if a tooth needs root canal treatment Dr Shaheer Aasim treats it under an operating microscope. One team, one set of records, one plan.
How often should you go?
The right answer depends on your mouth. If you have had gum disease, if you smoke, if you are diabetic, or if you build tartar quickly, you will need to come more often than someone with healthy, stable gums. Your hygienist will tell you what your mouth actually needs rather than what the calendar says. Keeping up your appointments is the cheapest good dental hygiene decision you can make.
Ready for a healthier smile?
If it has been more than a year, or your gums bleed when you brush, book a hygiene appointment. It is the cheapest appointment in dentistry and the one that prevents the expensive ones.
