Do Clear Aligners Really Work?
The fuller answer is that clear aligners work when the plan is right and you wear them. Those two conditions do most of the heavy lifting, and neither of them is about the plastic.

Yes. For the cases they are designed for, clear aligners work, and there are two decades of clinical evidence behind them.
The fuller answer is that clear aligners work when the plan is right and you wear them. Those two conditions do most of the heavy lifting, and neither of them is about the plastic. At Sheffield Smiles it is one of the questions we hear most, so here is an honest look at how clear aligners work, where they are the right choice, and where they are not.
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are custom-made, nearly invisible trays that straighten your teeth gently and gradually. Instead of metal brackets glued to the front of each tooth with a wire running between them, you wear a sequence of trays, each shaped slightly closer to the finished position than the last.
At Sheffield Smiles we work with Invisalign, Spark and Inman aligners. They are different systems and they suit different cases, which is rather the point of having more than one. If a practice only offers a single brand, every case they see somehow turns out to be a case for that brand. We would rather match the aligners to your teeth than the other way round.
How do clear aligners work?
The process begins with a consultation, where our dental team assesses your teeth and talks through what you want to change. This usually includes a digital scan of your mouth, which is far more comfortable than the old putty impressions.
From that scan we build a plan showing every movement, in order, from where your teeth are now to where they will finish. You see the plan before you commit to anything. We then design a series of trays specifically for your teeth. Each set is worn for around a week or two before you move to the next, and you keep them in for 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush.
The benefits of clear aligners
- Discreet. Their nearly invisible appearance means you can straighten your teeth without anyone noticing the treatment.
- Comfortable. With smooth edges and no metal components, they tend to be more comfortable than traditional braces, with far less irritation to the gums and cheeks.
- Removable. They come out for meals and cleaning, so looking after your teeth stays simple throughout treatment.
- Predictable. Each aligner moves your teeth by a planned amount, and you see the expected result on screen before you start.
- Fewer appointments. Traditional braces need regular tightening at the clinic. Aligners need reviews rather than adjustments, so you spend less time in the chair.
So why do people doubt them?
Because the marketing around aligners has been genuinely poor for years.
The at-home, post-your-own-impressions, no-dentist-involved companies have done real damage. When teeth are moved without anyone examining the gums holding them in place, or checking for decay or infection underneath, things go wrong. Some of those cases end up in practices like ours being put right.
That is not a problem with the treatment. It is a problem with removing the clinician. Clear aligners in a planned, supervised case are a well-established treatment. Aligners ordered off a website by someone who has never looked inside your mouth are a gamble with your teeth.
Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?
Clear aligners are effective for many people, but they are not a one-size-fits-all answer. They work best for mild to moderate issues such as crowding, gaps, or slight misalignment. More complex cases may need fixed braces or a combination of treatments, and we also fit Quick Straight Teeth and Damon braces where they are the better route.
There is one step that matters more than the brand, and it is the step the mail-order companies skip: your gums. You cannot safely move teeth through unhealthy bone. If there is any active gum disease it is treated first, always, and your gums are checked before a single aligner is made.
The importance of commitment
The success of clear aligners depends heavily on you. For the best result you have to wear them for the prescribed time and follow your dentist’s instructions.
Twenty to twenty-two hours a day is the whole game. The trays only move teeth while they are in, and the plan assumes they are in. Leave them out for long stretches and your teeth fall behind the sequence, the next tray does not seat properly, and treatment drags on. We would rather be straight with you about that at the start than have the conversation at month four.
How long does treatment take?
It depends entirely on the case. Clear aligners can produce visible results within a few months, while a full course usually runs from six months to around two years. At your consultation we give you a realistic timeline based on your actual teeth, not an average.
Retainers, the part nobody mentions
Teeth move for the rest of your life. Finish any orthodontic treatment without a retainer and they will gradually drift back, and that is equally true of braces and clear aligners. A retainer is not an upsell or an afterthought. It is the part that makes the previous months of work permanent, and any practice that does not raise it with you before you start is not being straight with you.

Why choose Sheffield Smiles?
When considering clear aligners, you want to be sure you are in good hands. Aligner brands are largely interchangeable now. What is not interchangeable is who reads your case.
Straightening rarely arrives on its own. If there is a missing tooth in the plan, our implant dentists are part of the conversation from the start rather than an afterthought. If a tooth needs root canal treatment before we move it, Dr Shaheer Aasim treats endodontic cases here under an operating microscope. And if your case is complex enough to need a consultant, Dr Shirin Shahr Baf is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.
Most practices refer these cases out. You end up telling your story at four different receptions and waiting weeks between each step. Here it is one team, one plan, one set of notes.

Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners painful?
Most people feel mild pressure for a day or two each time they move to a new set of clear aligners. That is the teeth moving, and it settles quickly. It is generally far more comfortable than traditional braces.
Can I eat and drink with clear aligners in?
Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water. Food can damage the trays and staining drinks will discolour them, so they go back in once you have brushed.
How much do clear aligners cost at Sheffield Smiles?
It depends on the complexity of your case, and you will have a clear figure before you commit. We offer 0% interest finance over 12 months on treatment over £1,000, with no deposit.
Will my teeth stay straight afterwards?
Only if you wear a retainer. Teeth naturally drift over time, so a retainer after clear aligners is what keeps your new smile in place for good.
