Dental Implants Explained: The Complete Patient Journey
After your clinical assessment, you will have a dedicated consultation with a treatment coordinator at Sheffield Smiles. This session focuses on turning clinical findings into a clear, practical treatment plan.

Dental Implants: A Step-by-Step Guide
Dental implants are a popular solution for missing teeth. They provide a permanent, natural-looking replacement that improves both function and aesthetics. Understanding the process can help you make an informed decision.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants consist of a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as a replacement root for a tooth. Over time, the implant fuses with the bone, creating a stable foundation for a crown or restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer several benefits, including improved speech, comfort, and oral health. They also help prevent bone loss and support the maintenance of natural facial structure.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
Every new patient at Sheffield Smiles receives a comprehensive assessment to understand their oral health and treatment needs.
Step 2: iTero Lumina Digital Scan
A digital scan is taken using the iTero Lumina, a modern intraoral scanner. This small handheld device captures a precise 3D model of your teeth in minutes.
There are no traditional moulds or impression materials, making the process more comfortable and eliminating the gag reflex often associated with conventional impressions.
The scan serves several purposes:
- It creates a permanent digital record of your teeth for future comparison
- It helps identify issues such as early wear or subtle bite misalignment
- It can generate a smile simulation to preview potential cosmetic outcomes
All new patients are scanned, regardless of whether they are considering cosmetic treatment. This is not for upselling, but to ensure a complete understanding of oral health from the outset.
Step 3: X-rays Where Clinically Necessary
X-rays are taken only when clinically required, not as a routine procedure. The dentist will explain why specific x-rays are recommended and what they will help assess.
Common examples include:
- Bitewing X-rays to detect decay between teeth
- Panoramic (OPG) X-rays to assess the full jaw and root structures
X-rays are charged separately at £15 per individual dental X-ray or £75 for a panoramic scan.
For more complex cases, particularly implant planning, a CBCT (cone beam) scan may be recommended. This may be carried out at a nearby imaging centre. CBCT scans are also available at approximately £250, with in-house availability planned in the future.
Step 4: Treatment Coordinator Consultation
After your clinical assessment, you will have a dedicated consultation with a treatment coordinator at Sheffield Smiles. This session focuses on turning clinical findings into a clear, practical treatment plan.
During this consultation, you will:
- Review recommended treatment options
- Understand the reasoning behind each step
- Discuss cost, sequencing, and timing
- View any smile simulations if applicable
- Explore financing options if needed
Finance options may include 0% interest plans through Tabeo for up to 18 months, with longer terms available at 9.9% APR.
This stage is designed to separate clinical diagnosis from financial and logistical discussions, allowing patients to make informed decisions without pressure.
You will leave with a written treatment plan, transparent pricing, and time to decide on your next steps.
